В 1987 году, после выхода альбома «The Uplift Mofo Party Plan», группа Red Hot Chili Peppers поехала в тур. В то время их вокалист Энтони Кидис плотно сидел на наркотиках, и после шоу в Пасадене он пошёл в парк — найти место, где можно их принять. Там он наткнулся на пару юных фанатов, которые подошли просто выразить ему своё почтение. Кидис вежливо отделался от них, пошёл через парк, нашёл первое попавшееся крыльцо, сел на него, разложил всё принесённое и занялся своими делами. Потом поднял глаза и увидел, что сидит прямо на входе в отделение полиции Пасадены...
Меньше чем через год один из этой пары фанатов, восемнадцатилетний Джон Фрушанте, стал новым гитаристом Red Hot Chili Peppers. Правда, на первом альбоме в составе группы, который вышел в 1989-м и назывался «Mother’s Milk», ему не дали сыграть так, как хотелось, из-за разногласий с продюсером Майклом Бейнхорном. Душу Джон отвёл только на инструментале «Pretty Little Ditty». Который выстрелил по-настоящему через десять лет, когда его засэмплировали Crazy Town для своего главного хита «Butterfly».
